MUTANA

Producer Profile

Mutana’s vast hills approach the edge of the Kibira Forest, which allows mist to fall from the forest and tumble onto farmers’ fields daily. With its mix of silty and sandy soils, Mutana can grow everything people like to eat right alongside coffee. This honey lot was processed at Heza Washing Station, which sits at 1,960 masl and proccesses coffee for a number of hills in addition to Mutana. Heza is the second washing station built by Long Miles, and has been in operation since 2014. It is the first station in Burundi to produce honey coffees. It is also our first Burundian honey! In the cup, we find notes of rooibos, warm spice, mulberry, and delicate florals.

Kayanza

The most well-known of Burundi's coffee growing regions, Kayanza has mild weather and relatively cool temperatures. Coffees from the highlands of Kayanza benefit from rich, volcanic soils and of course, high elevations.

Bourbon

Bourbon takes its name from Bourbon Island (now La Réunion), where it was introduced by French missionaries who had taken a few coffee seeds from Yemen in the 1700s. Along with Typica, Bourbon accounts for the basis of most of the world's coffee production today which is made up of Bourbon and Typica descendant varieties. Bourbon is known for its high-quality potential, susceptibility to disease and relatively low yields. The vast majority of coffee grown in Burundi is Red Bourbon.
