TERESA BURBANO

Producer Profile

Teresa Burbano is a 69 year old coffee producer who owns and operates her farm with the help of her son Carlos to recover coffee on their previously abandoned farm Finca La Toldopamba in La Piedra, Buesaco, Nariño. Finca Toldopamba—originally abandoned because of security concerns—lies at 1,800-1,850 masl is planted with several varieties including Maracaturra, Caturra, Pink Bourbon, Orange Bourbon, Castillo and SL28. Besides growing their coffee, they also maintain an area for vermiculture, and 12 bee hives to help with pollination.

Nariño

Nariño is characterized by steep slopes, and extremely high altitudes as well as a unique climate. Warm, humid air makes its way up from the valleys during the evening hours, allowing for coffee to be grown at higher altitudes than in the rest of Colombia, without risk of frost. The volcanic soil is rich in nutrients and is well-drained.

SL28

SL-28 is one of the best-known and highly sought-after varieties in Kenya. It was originally selected in the 1930s by Scott Laboratories. It is well regarded for its high-quality potential, its resistance to drought as well as its rusticity, meaning that it can survive on its own for years and later be brought back into production. Unfortunately, it is highly susceptible to coffee diseases. As such, we see less and less single variety SL from Kenya year after year as farmers naturally choose to rely more on disease-resistant hybrids. At the same time, SL-28 it has made its way to Latin America, most notably Costa Rica.
