BEKELE KACHARA

Producer Profile

Bekele is a quality-focused producer whose 4.5 hectare farm in Murago, at 2,350 meters above sea level, produced the 15th place Cup of Excellence coffee in 2022. The father of 11 children, Bekele brought in his Belaye, his eldest son at 24 and fourth child, to manage his drying station in Murago where he produces natural and anaerobic natural coffee. Bekele is a lontime coffee producer, with 20+ years of experience including working at cooperative-owned washing stations. He fertilizes his farm organically, using compost and other agricultural by-products.

Sidama

Arbegona Woreda is part of the famous Sidama zone, where many of our favourite Ethiopian coffees are grown. Coffee is the main cash crop in Arbegona, where it benefits from very high altitudes and a favourable micro-climate..

74158

74158 is one of six selections that were approved for release in 1974 as part of a CBD-resistance (Coffee Berry Disease) selection program. During the 1970's, researchers from the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre searched the forests in the Illuababora zone for CBD-resistant mother trees. Today 74158 is heavily propagated in South Western Ethiopia, and is one of two dominant varieties in Bensa, along with 74112.

Anaerobic Natural

Bekele fermented the cherry in a barrel fitted with an airlock for roughly 48h in shade. Then the cherry was dried on raised beds under shade for 25 days.
