Producer Profile
This beautiful coffee from producers Marcela Carerra and Esmeralda Zaragoza from La Guadalupe, Sierra Mazateca, is very special, and is the best Mexican coffee we have tasted to date. Both producers farm tiny plots, and thus their production is too small to separate. So, our importing partner Osito opted to combine the two lots to make one exportable micro-lot rather than mixing them into a larger community blend. We are very thankful they did, as this coffee blew us away on the cupping table! Marcela and Esmerelda's coffee shows why we've put so much focus on sourcing Mexican coffee over the last few years, and shows the exceptional quality potential coming from this oft-overlooked origin.
Esmeralda Zaragoza Gonzales and Marcela Carrera Martinez are coffee growers from La Guadalupe, in the Sierra Mazateca of northern Oaxaca. Both women are of Mazatec indigenous origin. Esmeralda is 21 years old. Two years ago, with the help of her father, she began renovating a hectare and half plot, which her grandparents started cultivating 50 years ago. Today, she grows Mundo Novo and Typica varieties between 1700 and 1800 m.a.s.l. Marcela is 45 years old and has been growing coffee for the last 20 years. She also grows Mundo Novo and Typica, on two separate plots which together cover approximately half a hectare.
Sitting right in between Mexico’s two other major coffee-growing regions Chiapas and Veracruz, Oaxaca produces some of the most distinctive coffees in Mexico. Coffee production in Oaxaca has not been modernized to the same extent as in its neighbouring regions, with many producers preferring traditional cultivation methods and coffee varieties.
Typica made its way out of Yemen by way of colonisation. In this case, the Dutch transported seeds to their colonial holdings in South America in 1719, from there the variety made its way to Brazil and then to the West Indies. Eventually, the English brought Typica to the Caribbean, from there, they were sent to Central America, where they were widely dispersed. Typica has very high quality potential at high altitudes in Central America. Unfortunately, it is highly susceptible to disease.
Mundo Novo resulted from a natural cross of Typica and Bourbon varieties in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The variety was discovered in 1943 in the municipality of Mundo Novo, which is now called Urupês. Mundo Novo is very tall, matures late, and has good quality potential at high altitudes. Unfortunately is highly susceptible to fungus, pests, and disease.
As is typical in this region, the coffees are fermented for 24-48 hours before being washed and then dried on patio or woven petates (mats) for 10-15 days.
