MI'ESSA ROBE

Producer Profile

This is now our third year buying this single-producer lot from Mi’essa Robe, who grows coffee in the Suke Qutto Kebele, in Shakiso, Guji. Mi’essa grows coffee—CBD resistant selections and local landraces—under the shade of indigenous trees and delivers that coffee to Ture Waji's Suke station. There, the cherry is naturally processed, laid out on raised beds for 21-28 days, depending on the weather. During that time, the coffee is turned over regularly to ensure even drying. It is still quite rare to be able to buy single-producer lots from Guji; we are thankful for the work by Ture Waji, Sookoo, and our importing partner Osito for enabling these separations.

Guji

This famous coffee growing region is known for its rich, volcanic soil. High altitudes, bi-modal rainfall patterns and dry weather which allows for coffee to develop slowly and consistently here.

Local Landraces

74112 is one of six selections that were approved for release in 1974 as part of a CBD-resistance (Coffee Berry Disease) selection program. During the 1970's, researchers from the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre searched the forests in the Illuababora zone for CBD-resistant mother trees. Today 74112 has been widely distributed across most growing regions in the country.

Short and compact with small leaves, cherries, and beans; Gibirinna 74110 is one of the most planted varieties in Ethiopia. The mother tree of this variety was selected in 1974 by JARC (Jimma Agricultural Research Centre) in the Metu province for its CBD resistance. After research and development by JARC, it was released in 1979 and recommended for planting in the altitude range of 1,500-2,100 masl.
