JUAN PABLO MALACATOS MAYO

Producer Profile

In our third year working with Juan Pablo's Mejorado, we are delighted to see a major improvement in cup quality. As such, we paid—through our importer Quest—an additional bonus on top of the original price, all of which went back to Juan Pablo. At only 24 years old, Juan Pablo Malacatos Mayo manages Finca Nueva Esperanza in Palanda, Zamora-Chinchipe. The farm consists of two hectares of land at 1,700 masl, and has around 7,000 coffee trees in production of the Mejorado variety. Since his farm is only 2 hectares, Juan Pablo doesn't need to hire any full-time employees. Instead, he exchanges labour with neighbouring farms to help each other's cherry harvest.

Zamora-Chinchipe

Zamora Chinchipe, located in Southern Ecuador to the East of Loja is characterized by high altitudes, rich biodiversity, and woodlands. The harvest here runs from March through October, peaking in August.

Mejorado

Often called Typica Mejorado, genetic testing done by World Coffee Research has shown that Mejorado is in fact a cross between Bourbon and an Ethiopian Landrace variety. The vast majority of Mejorado is farmed in Ecuador where it has exceptional quality potential, often showing aromatic florals and deep sweetness.

.

Washed

De-pulped on the day of harvest. Dry-fermented for 70 hours. Hand-sorted. Dried on raised beds for 16 days until moisture content reaches 10.5%.
